{"id":14250,"date":"2023-05-30T21:47:25","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T02:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.anniee.net\/?page_id=14250"},"modified":"2025-06-26T12:08:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T17:08:26","slug":"travelogue-chicago-with-kids-part-1","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.anniee.net\/?page_id=14250","title":{"rendered":"Travelogue: Chicago with Kids, Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>April 2023<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Where We Stayed: Homewood Suites by Hilton Chicago Downtown South Loop<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We gave Mike and his kids a trip to Chicago for their big Christmas present.\u00a0 The fun element to this, for the kids, was that they got to pick everything that we did and everywhere we went to eat.\u00a0 Well, within reason.\u00a0 But they picked good stuff!\u00a0 I&#8217;m breaking this trip up into three posts because we did\u00a0<em>a lot<\/em> in 2.5 days!\u00a0 As always, in an effort to protect their privacy, I do not post photos that include the kids&#8217; faces.\u00a0 But you&#8217;ll still get a great sense of what we did and everything that we experienced.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">We took the Amtrak train from Milwaukee to Chicago. Easier than driving on a Friday afternoon and the kids\u00a0<em>loved<\/em> the novelty of train travel. The cost was probably about even&#8230; train tickets vs. the cost of gas and parking.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">We arrived at Union Station and took the L to Roosevelt, then walked a few blocks to our hotel.\u00a0 Mike ordered <a href=\"https:\/\/giordanos.com\/\">Giordano&#8217;s<\/a> pizza while we were on the train and it was delivered within 10 minutes of us arriving at the hotel.\u00a0<em>Perfect<\/em> timing!<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The next morning we got up bright and early for Museum Day.\u00a0 Breakfast was free at the hotel &#8212; but it was so bad and we decided that would be our one and only free breakfast of the trip.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Our first stop was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adlerplanetarium.org\/\">Adler Planetarium<\/a>. I hadn&#8217;t been in YEARS and oh, I was happy to be back. I love all things outer space &#8212; plus we saw two planetarium shows. My heart was content.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">After the Adler, we stopped for lunch.\u00a0 Chicago-style hot dogs from a food cart.\u00a0 Delicious!\u00a0 And <a href=\"https:\/\/rainbowcone.com\/\">Rainbow Cones<\/a> for dessert.\u00a0 There are many food trucks and stands on Museum Campus, which is so convenient.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Next up was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheddaquarium.org\/\">Shedd Aquarium<\/a>. Aquariums are never my favorite (I think it&#8217;s the smell of fish, tbh), but the Shedd is special.\u00a0 The kids loved the gigantic aquarium that greets you when you walk through the door.\u00a0 They could have spent the entire afternoon staring at all the cool fish and creatures.\u00a0 But we moved on to see the Beluga whale and dolphin show, which is always precious.\u00a0 Those Belugas are so damn cute!<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">We ended our time at the Shedd with a visit to the gift shop.\u00a0 Obviously.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">We all had sore feet and were tired, so we walked back to the hotel to rest a bit before our final stop of the day: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldmuseum.org\/\">Field Museum<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The Field Museum was having a Members&#8217; Night and as luck would have it, we are members.\u00a0 It was cool to be able to visit after hours!\u00a0 Mike and the kids did a behind-the-scenes tour and I went to see the temporary exhibition about death (on brand for my current stage in life and grief).\u00a0 The death exhibition was wonderful and moving and of course, I cried. Two thumbs up.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">We all hit a\u00a0<em>wall<\/em>&#8230; it was time to go back to the hotel and be finished for the day.\u00a0 Mike went to pick up Chipotle take-out and we had a chill evening after such a busy day!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14251\" src=\"https:\/\/www.anniee.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/001-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"900\" data-kale-share-title=\"Travelogue: Chicago with Kids, Part 1\" data-kale-share-url=\"https:\/\/www.anniee.net\/?page_id=14250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.anniee.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/001-1.jpg 675w, https:\/\/www.anniee.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/001-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/>We had a rainbow on the way to Chicago!
