Travelogue: Ireland — Cliffs of Moher & Adare

July 2022
Where We Stayed: The Killarney Plaza Hotel

They don’t call it the Emerale Isle for nothin’! Ireland was just more beautiful and more colorful with every passing day – I never wanted to leave.

We had a gorgeous blue-skied and clear day for the Cliffs of Moher.  800ft sheer drops into the Atlantic — stunning and humbling.  The Cliffs are located in County Clare and because we had such a clear day, we could also see the Aran Islands in the distance.

I also got to see cows. You can take the girl out of Wisconsin but you can never take the Wisconsin out of the girl.

After our time at the Cliffs, we drove to Adare.  Adare is a village located in County Limerick and it feels like it’s right out of a fairytale.  Adare is known for its thatched cottages and medieval buildings.  One of the other things that we noticed again and again was how beautiful the hydrangeas are in Ireland.  I’m not sure if it was the climate that made them so extra stunning, but I kept saying over and over, “oh my god, look at those hydrangeas”… all colors, but the pinks, purples, and blues were especially goregous.

Really excited about the cows!
I felt like trying to photograph the Cliffs was kind of like trying to photograph the Grand Canyon — nothing was ever going to adequately capture the beauty and scale. You just gotta go see them in person.
Another day, another selfie. What you don’t see here is me trying to catch my breath because nothing humbles you quite like hundreds of STAIRS.
If I had a dollar for every rook I saw…
Welcome to Adare
I told you it was CUTE.
County Limerick’s colors are green and white — hence the green and white bunting.  And also, this business owner must have been a fan of County Kerry (the green and yellow flag) – the victors of the big Gaelic football match.
I think I took hundreds of mediocre photos of the colorful buildings because I just couldn’t believe that nearly ALL of the buildings in Ireland are wild colors like this. This orange isn’t unusual. We rolled through little bitty towns and every single building was a bright color.
Would you care for a creepy fairy figurine?
I didn’t get any creepy fairies, but I had to try these!
We ended our day in Killarney — and took a brief walk near our hotel.  Killarney is in County Kerry — and because County Kerry won the championship, the town was awash in yellow and green!
